How to play FPL: A beginner’s guide

New to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and unsure where to begin? The Scout is here to guide you through the essentials.

Joining the Game If you’re interested in joining millions of managers who enjoy FPL, The Scout will help you get started. All the basics you need to know about the game are right here.

Building Your Squad After signing up, you’ll have a £100.0m budget to build an initial squad of 15 players: two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders, and three forwards. You can select up to three players from any single Premier League team.

Selecting Your Starting XI Each Gameweek, you’ll need to choose a starting XI from your squad. You can select any formation as long as it includes one goalkeeper, a minimum of three defenders, two midfielders, and one forward. Remember, the deadline to submit your team is always 90 minutes before the first Gameweek match.

Scoring Points Points are awarded based on player performance, such as goals, assists, saves, and clean sheets. Bonus points are available through the Bonus Points System (BPS) for top performers in each match. If a starting player doesn’t play, points from your highest-ranked substitute are automatically counted instead. You’ll also select a captain and a vice-captain each week, with the captain’s score doubling. If your captain doesn’t play, the vice-captain’s score will be doubled.

Joining Leagues Once your squad is set, you can join or create leagues to compete with friends or other FPL managers globally. Private leagues allow you to invite friends, while public leagues match you with 19 other managers. You can participate in up to 25 private leagues and five public leagues.

Making Transfers Each Gameweek, you receive one free transfer to exchange a player within your budget. Additional transfers cost four points each. If you don’t use your free transfer, you can roll it over to the next Gameweek, allowing up to two free transfers.

Player Prices Player prices fluctuate based on transfer popularity. For instance, a player valued at £7.0m may rise to £7.5m if many managers transfer him in. Selling a player who has increased in value will earn you a profit, though a 50% sell-on fee applies, rounded down to the nearest £0.1m.

Chips There are five chips to enhance your team’s score over the season:

  • Wildcard: Restructure your team without a points penalty (available twice a season).
  • Triple Captain: Triple your captain’s points.
  • Bench Boost: Include points from your substitutes.
  • Free Hit: Reset your team for one week.

The Wildcard is particularly powerful, allowing you unlimited transfers for a single Gameweek. Each season offers two Wildcards, one per half. Remember, only one chip can be used in a Gameweek.
